Jack Russell Terriers are one of the most highly valued dog breeds belonging to the working group. This breed possesses all the characteristics necessary for a successful hunter. The Jack Russell Terrier is alert and intelligent, courageous and confident.

The Jack Russell Terrier has a fairly long muscular body, enabling him to be used for foxhunting. The Jack Russell's coat may be of three types: rough, smooth or broken. The broken type is smooth on the body but with whiskers on the dog's face. The white color should be predominant in all coat types. Common coat colors are black and white, tan and white, and the combination of these three colors. Almond shaped eyes are small and dark. Small ears are V shaped, and carried against the head.

Litter Size: 4-8 puppies in a litter

Jack Russell Terriers originated in Devon, England in 1800s. Jack Russells are not purebred in the proper sense of this word. They were bred to hunt and therefore, the Jack Russell Terrier's standard may vary.

Reverend John Russell (1795-1883) is known to have given the breed its name. His passion for foxhunting resulted in a great interest in breeding hunting dogs. The breed was extremely popular in England, but it was recognized only in 1990.

Jack Russell Terrier Club of America does not register the dogs that haven't passed a structured veterinary examination. As a basic rule, this dog breed is considered one of the healthiest. Being a working dog, the Jack Russell Terrier has good health. However, some hereditary diseases are possible in Jack Russells. Lens luxation, legg-perthes disease, epilepsy, skin infections, and deafness. Lens luxation can cause vision impairment or even blindness in the dog. Legg-perthes disease results in the Jack Russell Terrier having pain in the hips.

In order to be sure that the dog is growing healthy and won't experience any of the above-mentioned diseases and conditions in future, buy a puppy from a responsible breeder. Jack Russell Terriers are wonderful working dogs that are called to be active through all their life.
