Jack Russell Terriers are known to do exceptionally well at trials. Terrier trials consist of three stages. They are conformation, go-to-ground and racing. All these types are rather spectacular and exciting to watch. In conformation, the Jack Russell Terrier's exterior, movement and temperament are judged. The winner is the dog whose appearance and temperamental characteristics are the closest to the standard.
For go-to-ground special equipment serves a model of the earth tunnel, where the Jack Russell may show his skills. The judges evaluate the dog's skills to quickly find the quarry (normally, three rats are placed in a cage at the end of the course).
The racing division is very impressive for dog owners, handlers and spectators. A course is a 150-feet long track with a lure attached to a string that is moved along the way to excite the dogs and is a means to judge the dog's ability to follow the prey. The winner has the lure in its mouth.
The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America gives several types of certificates for working: the Sporting Certificate, the Natural Hunting Certificate Below Ground in the Field, and the Trial Certificate. The major goal of terrier trials is to determine the best working dog. Jack Russell Terriers often appear among trial winners.
