Jack Russell Terriers should be registered when they reach the age of 1 year old. The dog must be mature enough to answer the standard's requirements. The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America considers each application for registration individually. The fact that the dog's parents were registered with the JRTCA does not necessarily mean that the dog is sure to be registered as well.
The JRTCA and the JRT Club of Great Britain appeal to Jack Russell Terrier owners and all interested individuals and organizations in order to oppose the breed's recognition by any all-breeds registry. The Jack Russell Terrier was recognized by the UKC in 1992. The problem is that the JRTCA strives to preserve the breed as purely working dogs. While recognition with national all-breed organizations will mean some impairment of the working dog qualities.
The JRTCA is doing a great job turning down inbred Jack Russells and dogs with genetic faults. Thus, only the best Jack Russell Terrier dogs, possessing remarkable working dog qualities are registered.
Jack Russell Terriers - Pictures - Hunting Instinct
Jack Russells have a strong inborn hunting instinct. If you don't want to deal with a hunting dog, consider another dog breed. Otherwise, you will have to deal with a highly energetic and active dog that will need to have enough exercise and training to be physically and mentally healthy. In rural areas, it is recommended to keep such a dog on a leash, as there is a danger your dog will take off after some animal and follow it underground. The hunting instinct is so strong that Jack Russells can spend hours without food and water. Therefore, it is important to realize that your dog is special. Training the hunting instinct out of Jack Russell Terriers is next to impossible.
